Acadian-Cajun ancestry map
The above map shows U.S. cities with the highest percentages of people claiming Acadian-Cajun ancestry. The map was drawn from U.S. Census 2000 data, which predates the massive displacement in this area caused by Hurricane Katrina.

ACADIAN-CAJUN

Acadians immigrated from France and settled in the Canadian Maritimes. When the British seized their property and deported them in 1755, thousands moved to northern Maine and Louisiana. Their strong presence in the New Orleans area is evident from the above map and from their influence on Louisiana culture. (The word "Cajun" is a regional corruption of "Acadian.")

ePodunk mapped the top communities by percentage of population. The map and the following list show communities in which 1,000 or more people listed an ancestry group, and in which at least 5 percent of those people said they were Acadian-Cajun.
