AFRICAN-AMERICAN

Nearly 25 million people - 8.8 percent of the U.S. population - claimed African-American heritage in the 2000 census. The map above shows that communities with the highest proportion of African-American population tend to be in the South, Mid-Atlantic and Midwest.
