After Japan abandoned its isolationist stance in the mid-1800s, Japanese began moving to Hawaii and the west coast. Early immigrants were recruited to work on Hawaiian sugar plantations.

Internment camps established during World War II caused a displacement of thousands of Japanese Americans. Many ended up leaving their homes permanently and settling elsewhere in the U.S.

In the 2000 census, 795,051 people in the U.S. claimed Japanese ancestry.

ePodunk mapped the top communities by percentage of population. The map and the following list show communities in which 1,000 or more people listed an ancestry group, and in which at least 2 percent of those people said they were of Japanese ancestry. (Note: Although the above map shows the continental U.S., many communities with significant Japanese populations are in Hawaii. See the list below.)
