Jerome is on Mingus Mountain, in the Prescott National Forest
Built on the steep slopes of Cleopatra Hill, the community actually began to slide down the mountain when it declined during the Depression. The Sliding Jail wound up 225 feet from where it was built

The mines closed in 1953. Jerome has rebounded as a popular haven for artists and tourists
