Prineville is a city in Crook County, in the Prineville metro area.

It is the county seat.

The community was named for Barney Prine, local merchant. Lewis A. McArthur, author of "Oregon Place Names," notes that Prine's merchandise consisted primarily of good whiskey in the front room and some blacksmithing equipment in the back room. Most of his business was done in the back room.
