The town was once surrounded by barbed-wire, to keep out the longhorns grazing on the surrounding plains.

The Creek tribe, which had suffered tremendous loss of life on the Trail of Tears from Alabama and Georgia, established its capital here in 1868.

Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 8. The number of murders and homicides was 0. The violent crime rate was 2.7 per 1,000 people.
