Virginia City is in Storey County, in the Reno-Sparks metro area.
It is the county seat.
The community was named for prospector "Old Virginia" Fennimore, who arrived in 1851.
The latitude of Virginia City is 39.309N. The longitude is -119.648W.
It is in the Pacific Standard time zone. Elevation is 6,198 feet.
Virginia City is in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada.
The community boomed with the Comstock Lode, a rich vein of silver and gold discovered in 1859. Virginia City's elite experienced the height of luxury, with evening dress, champagne and servants.
The mines closed in 1942. After World War II, the city began attracting tourists.
The community is now a federally designated historic district.
