Brooklyn Heights is a neighborhood of Brooklyn
. Elevation is 85 feet.
Bounded by the Queens Expressway, Atlantic Avenue, Court Street and Cadman Plaza West.
After suffering defeat in the Battle of Brooklyn, George Washington's troops escaped the British by crossing the East River here under cover of fog.
Development began after the start of ferry service to Manhattan in 1814.
Henry Ward Beecher, brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe, was a preacher here starting in the late 1840s. A dedicated abolitionist, his sermons drew thousands.
In 1965, after many years of lobbying, the neighborhood became an historic district, New York City's first. This was instrumental in preserving its character.
The headquarters of the Jehovah's Witnesses are located here.
