The community began as a trading and transportation center along the Mississippi River landings. In the mid-19th century, it developed into a busy steamboat port.

Though I'm a great admirer of 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show,' I always thought it contained an unacknowledged geographic dissonance. Mary walks to work and throws her cap up in Minneapolis, but her colleagues in the newsroom, in their vivid homeliness, seem as if they really belong in St. Paul.
