The community was named for Ulysses S. Grant.

The first settlers arrived in the 1820s.

Some local county residents fought small guerilla-type affairs against Union troops here in late 1861.

Shortly afterward, in 1862, the state made the community Calhoun County's county seat. Until the end of the century, Arnoldsburg, the old county seat, battled unsuccessfully to win back the county seat.

In 1896, Grantsville incorporated.
