Shepherdstown is on the Potomac River.
Former and merged names include:
· New Mecklenburg
During the Civil War, the town was overwhelmed with thousands of wounded soldiers from the Battle of Antietam. Three days later, on Sept. 20, 1862, the fighting moved to Shepherdstown. More than 100 Confederate soldiers died here and were buried in Elmwood Cemetery.
Early experiments with steam-powered boats occurred here, almost 20 years before Robert Fulton launched the Clermont
Settled by German immigrants around 1730.The German influence in the community dates to its founding. The main thoroughfare is still called German Street.
