Bothell is on the Sammamish River, 12 miles northeast of Seattle.
Until the second decade of the 20th century, logging dominated the local economy.

Bothell incorporated in 1909, the same time that agriculture began to dominate the local economy.

The Sammamish River was straightened and deepened, in the 1910s, to help prevent flooding.

With the arrival of the Lake Washington Shipping Canal in 1917, and the subsequent lowering of Lake Washington's water level, the cantankerous Sammaish River was no longer a problem.

The University of Washington opened a campus in Bothell in 1990.

The community doubled in size in the 1990s, when it annexed Canyon Park.

In 2006, UW Bothell became a fully functioning university when it welcomed its first freshman class.
