The community was named for the Carnation Milk Products Company.

The latitude of Carnation is 47.648N. The longitude is -121.912W.

Carnation is at junction of the Tolt and Snoqualmie rivers.
Former and merged names include:
· Tolt
· Grand Rapids
· Tolthue
The area was the center of Snoqualmie tribe life prior to the arrival of non-native settlers. Chief Patkanim signed a treaty allowing the U.S. take control on the area in 1855.

The community's first non-native inhabitants arrived in the mid-1860s, though it would be almost forty years until more serious development occurred.

Many of the early settlers hailed from Scandinavia. Logging dominated the local economy in the 19th century.

The community incorporated in 1902.
