Des Moines is a city in King County, in the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metro area.

The community was named for the Des Moines Improvement Company, which was named for the city in Iowa.

The latitude of Des Moines is 47.401N. The longitude is -122.323W.

It is in the Pacific Standard time zone. Elevation is 92 feet.

Des Moines is on Puget Sound, 15 miles south of Seattle.
Initial development of the community began in 1889 when F.A. Blasher bought the land.

Mills servicing the lumber industry opened soon thereafter.

In the 1930s, a highway was built that connected the community to Seattle and Tacoma, helping to stimulate the local economy.

Turning down the opportunity to become part of the ever-growing community of Kent, community residents voted to incorporate in 1959.

Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 109. The number of murders and homicides was 0. The violent crime rate was 3.7 per 1,000 people.
