The community was named for Willard Houghton, lumberman.

Kirkland first offered to annex Houghton in 1947. Houghton resdients turned down the offer and, instead, incorporated Houghton as its own city.
Twenty-one years later however, in 1968, Houghton was annexed by Kirkland.
