Alexandria became part of the District of Columbia in 1789, but homesick Virginians begged for a return to the Old Dominion; their petition was granted in 1847.

Alexandria, VA

Pros: King Street, the Torpedo Factory (a plaza containing several art galleries and studios), the waterfront, Beautiful architecture, close to DC.

Cons: Expensive to live in, and pretty homogenous.

This is a good place to Go shopping! There are so many art galleries and small businesses along King Street, great restaurants, and wonderful music venues.

General info: The Yellow Line makes a stop close to King Street.
