The library encompasses three adjacent buildings: the Thomas Jefferson Building across the street from the U.S. Capitol; the James Madison Building at 101 Independence Ave, SE; and the John Adams Building on 2nd St, SE
The Library was originally founded as a resource center for Congress. The original building was burned in 1814 and the library was moved in 1897 to the Thomas Jefferson building
