Former and merged names include:
· Henry
A disputed county seat election, held in 1887, between the communities of Henry and Childress City, which were located four miles apart, resulted in Henry winning - but only after changing its name to Childress.

The community's first railroad arrived in 1887. It would play a most vital role in the local economy for the next 50 years.

Crime: The number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 19. The number of murders and homicides was 0. The violent crime rate was 2.8 per 1,000 people.
