Santa Anna began to grow rapidly in the mid-1880s, when the railroad arrived.

Santa Anna incorporated in 1906. Five years later, sand from the area began to shipped away for use in the creation of glass.

The community's population topped out at just under 2,000 in 1930. It has been declining ever since.
