The neighborhood is named for brothers Charles and Joel Wicker, landowners.
Starting in the 1880s, Poles began arriving in the neighborhood. In short order, Division Street became known as "Polish Broadway."
Jews, mostly from eastern Europe, began to populate the community in increasing numbers in the first decade of the 20th century.
Today, West Divsion Street, or what was once Polish Broadway, has become a trendy shopping and cafe district.
