Near South Side
Near South Side is a neighborhood of Chicago
The community is located just south of the Loop.
The community is bounded roughly by Lake Michigan, the South Branch of the Chicago River, Federal Street, and 26th Street.
Following the 1871 fire, when the neighborhood went unscathed, many fine homes in the area became temporary housing facilities.
At the end of the 19th century, Prairie Avenue was one of the city's most fashionable areas within which to live.
At the beginning of the 20th century, a community of southern African-American immigrants, known as the "Black Belt," came to be on State Street.
In the 1920s and 1930s, multiple landfill projects allowed for the creation of a complex of museums and Soldier Field.
Immigrants from Germany, Ireland, and Scandinavia first settled the area, in the 1830s, while working on the Illinois & Michigan Canal.
