One tradition says the community's name comes from the large numbers of sparrows, in the late 1800s, that fed off stockyard waste. Another associates the name with the neighborhood's troubled youths, "wild canaries."
For much of the city's history, Canaryville was regarded as a tough neighborhood, possibly Chicago's toughest.
Largely an Irish enclave throughout much of its history, the area now includes a substantial Mexican community as well.
