Canaryville map
Canaryville is a neighborhood of Chicago.

One tradition says the community's name comes from the large numbers of sparrows, in the late 1800s, that fed off stockyard waste. Another associates the name with the neighborhood's troubled youths, "wild canaries."

The neighborhood is bounded by 40th and 47th streets, Wentworth Avenue and Halsted.

For much of the city's history, Canaryville was regarded as a tough neighborhood, possibly Chicago's toughest.

The neighborhood's early growth, from the 1860s onwards, largely stems from the nearby slaughter houses and packaging facilities.

Largely an Irish enclave throughout much of its history, the area now includes a substantial Mexican community as well.
