Kenwood is a neighborhood of Chicago
The community was named for the estate of dentist Jonathan A. Kennicott.
The community is 5 miles south of downtown Chicago.
The neighborhood is on Lake Michigan.
The community is bounded by Lake Michigan, Cottage Grove Avenue, 43rd Street, and 51st Street.
Before Prairie Avenue surpassed it, in the final quarter of the 19th century, Kenwood was regarded as the South Side's best address.
The area experienced large-scale over-crowding during WWII.
By 1940, more than four out of five area residents were African-American.
After experiencing mid-century hardships, the community began to rebound in the 1970s, when some parts of the area were given historic district status.
Well-known residents have included:
· William Rand, map publisher
· John G. Shedd, former president and chairman of Marhsall Field
· Louis Sullivan, architect
