The area is not a unified community, stemming from its creation by University of Chicago sociologists in the 1920s, and includes the more widely recognized neighborhoods of Canaryville and Back of the Yards.
Stock yards and meat packing houses flourished in the area until the 1950s.
By the 1970s, all stock yards and meat packing houses had closed. However, tax incentives lured other industrial businesses to the area in the 1980s and 1990s.
