The community is bounded by the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad, the Pennsylvania Railroad, the Chicago River, and 16th Street.
In the 1830s, the city's first African American enclave started here.
After the Fire of 1871, hundreds of thousands of Chicagoans sought safe haven in the area.
At the end of the 19th century, Jane Addams opened Hull House.
Beginning in the 1930s, the area began to attract large number of Mexicans and African-Americans.
