The community is named for Stephen A. Douglas, U.S. senator and lawyer.

During the Civil War, Camp Douglas was established here and housed prisoner Confederate soldiers, many of whom died.
Many prominent Jewish families called the area home at the end of the 19th century.
African Americans began to dominate the area at the beginning of the 20th century. Along with Grand Boulevard, Douglas was the center of black life in Chicago.
