Bismarck is on the Missouri River.
The Lewis and Clark expedition spent its first winter near here in 1804. The explorers camped at an Indian village on the upper Missouri River.
Established in 1873 as the western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad's transcontinental line. Gold was discovered here in 1874.
In recent years, the city has grown as a regional health center.
