During the same period, 389 people died from cancer. The county death rate from cancer was 3.1 per thousand people, compared with 1.6 per thousand statewide.
A reported 51 people died in motor vehicle accidents. The county death rate from such accidents was 0.4 per thousand people, compared with 0.2 per thousand statewide.
The average age of people living in Polk County at the time of the 2000 census was 40.1, compared with 33.9 statewide and 36.2 nationwide.
