TAKING THE TRAIN Only 1 in 20 use public transit We do love our cars. Just 5 percent of the 128.6 million people nationwide who travel to work use public transportation. And in only one city - New York - do most workers take the bus or train. The map above shows the cities where 15 percent or more of people take public transportation to work. The slightly longer list at right shows cities where 10 percent or more are train, bus and subway commuters. The numbers are reported in the American Community Survey, conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2002. Statistics for states and counties can be seen at the bureau's Web site.
